Dear readers,
Today I offer this brief thank you. We’ve passed the 200 followers mark for Norris Note here on Substack.
Being a working writer is a strange road, especially in these times. Gone are the days of the Gertrude Stein-style matrons of the arts propping up the Hemingways. Fading are the memories of anti-Establishment, culture leading independent outlets like Rolling Stone or Playboy bankrolling the Hunter S Thompsons and Kurt Vonneguts. What’s the writer’s pathway now? I increasingly believe we’ll only have a clue with the benefit of a decade’s hindsight. What seems apparent is that the “liberated voices” of 2020s America are scrambling. Is it all a chess game or Eeny, meeny, miny, moe? Are we in a gladiator pit or a refugee crisis? The Matrix? The Purge? Who knows.
Yet, we write! The contemporary writer is a scrappy sailor who must follow the wind changes and confused seas along a wild stretch of Alaskan coastline, not Martini swilling yachtsmen luxuriating upon warm Grecian waters. And you know what? I wouldn’t have it any other way. Although Greece does sound nice. And I do love Martinis.
So thank you again for the subscribing and following. The Digital Realm is all about these metrics and it feels great to “exist”. We’ve got a pulse and being a working writer is its own kind of dream that I feel fortunate to live.
Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to finish a few sea salty articles for magazines and get the upcoming issue of The Sea Chest ready for layout. I’m also awaiting some potentially major publishing developments, so fingers crossed for good news on that front. Skål!
Gratefully,
Norris
PS My Power & Motoryacht article about the Seapiper 37 is now available to read online. Check it out here.
“Usually, a boat turns heads because of its undeniable beauty. But occasionally, like in the case of the Seapiper 37, it turns them because it’s just plain different. With all due respect, funky even...”
I'll be your Gertrude Stein, friend
I won't make a lot of sense and you probably will not like me, but anyway, your writing career will continue to flourish.
